2025 Contest Winner
Boden Bain
It wasn’t an easy vote—so many creative entries to choose from! But in the end, the top design came from 13-year-old Boden Bain, who’s heading into 8th grade at Northfield.
What inspired Boden’s winning design?
“It’s all about America,” he said. “The 50 stars stand for the 50 states.” A tree below the starfield ties into this year’s theme, “Back to Our Roots,” and several small figures represent “the people in our community.”
The project was part of an art class assignment, and his teacher encouraged him to enter. When committee member Diane McKain called to share the news, she told him, “We got a lot of entries and yours was voted the best one.”
Boden’s reaction? “I was excited! Bouncing off the walls,” he said. His mom, Charlene Walko, tried to call him but couldn’t reach him—so she told his dad, who delivered the big news.
Charlene’s take? “Oh, yes, I was excited!”
When he’s not creating art, Boden enjoys PE class, basketball, dodgeball—and hopes to play soccer this year. As for the future? “Whatever makes me happy. Maybe an astronaut,” he says with a grin.
Want a piece of Boden’s artwork? His design will be featured on this year’s commemorative button, available during Northfield’s 3-day Labor Day weekend celebration — Saturday, Sunday, and Labor Day Monday.
Don’t miss it!
